Point Carbon Registers One Thousand Offset Projects in North American Database
Washington, DC – February 11, 2010 – Today, Point Carbon announced that its database of carbon offset projects in the United States and Canada has passed the one thousand project mark. The Carbon Project Manager North America product was launched by Point Carbon in 2008, and it is the leading source for comprehensive North American carbon offset project information and market analysis. Point Carbon is the leading independent provider of market intelligence, news, analysis, forecasting and advisory services for the energy and environmental markets.
“In the face of policy uncertainty, offset project developers continue to move ahead of the curve to successfully market their carbon credits,” noted Justin Felt, Product Manager for Carbon Project Manager North America. He further added: “By purchasing from the projects listed in our database, large carbon emitters can hedge against future cap-and-trade regulation and reduce future costs of compliance.”
Many buyers of voluntary or pre-compliance offset credits hope that they will be able to use them for compliance purposes under early-action provisions if a US federal cap-and-trade system is enacted. Such a strategy could save capped entities large sums of money since the cost of carbon credits generated from offset projects would increase if proposed cap-and-trade legislation is passed by Congress.
The thousandth project to be listed is a livestock methane capture project at the Green Mountain Dairy Farm in Sheldon, Vermont. This project is one of 242 projects in Carbon Project Manager North America that can enable the off-takers to become active in the primary markets in order to ensure that the offsets created are high quality, permanent, and additional. The digester, provided by GHD, Inc. converts manure from 1,050 dairy cows into biogas. After the manure from the farm’s dairy cows has been treated in a storage tank, the digester captures the methane, which is then used to generate electricity. An on-site generator can produce up to 225 kilowatts of electricity from the methane. By capturing the methane rather than releasing it to the atmosphere, the project reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as methane is twenty one times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
The Green Mountain Dairy Farm sees this project as a way to put its farm ahead of the curve. “We saw this as an opportunity to implement an economic and environmental management tool to take our farm into the future for the next generation,” said Bill Rowell, co-owner of the Green Mountain Dairy Farm.
